In an architecture philosophy class, I once argued that the site of architecture is actually the human body. A bit esoteric, I know, though please bear with me for a moment. The light quality, the spaciousness of a room, the path you take through the building all impacts your experience of it. I admit that I was not the best architect. I cared more about how a space made you feel than the connections of how the building was constructed...
I now approach designing jewelry in a similar manner. How a piece sits on your body, how the weight of it can alert you to its presence, and how easily it transforms your self expression are all considered when I sculpt a piece out of wax. Certainly this is not a novel perspective at all, though it is where my thoughts are most of the time!
With love, Alexa
